By Way of the Wilderness is another wonderful story by Isabella Alden. The tale provides all the reasons and causes for misplaced emotions, illogical thinking, and complete misunderstandings that can happen between a father and son. The novel give great insight as to how an individual can, of his own volition, choose to make his life's path more difficult by traveling the wilderness road. An excellent read!Product details

By Way Of The Wilderness Pansy C M Livingstone 9781278858647 Books Reviews
From the cover, this seems like it's a story of a romance that develops possibly at a countryside resort or maybe during a pioneering journey. It isn't. The story almost exclusively follows the spiritual development of Wayne Pierson from boyhood through manhood.
From the beginning, he is at the mercy of situations he can't control. Still grieving for his mother, who has died, and just barely beginning to form a sturdy relationship with his proud, somewhat stern and chilly father, he is horrified to suddenly hear that his father is bringing home a new mother and a brother. This could have turned out well... but his new mother idolizes her spoiled, dishonest, bullying son Leon as "fun-loving", and his new brother likes nothing better than to torment and humiliate Wayne, especially if it makes him look bad in front of his father. As the two boys grow, Wayne's relationship with his father becomes worse and worse because his father never perceives Leon's dishonesty or cruelty.
Finally Leon's horrible tendencies get him into trouble at college, but Leon carefully switches his name with Wayne's in the letter that arrives to their clueless father. Wayne leaves home in a fury - the first of several anger-driven, impulsive decisions that will direct his life.
The "Wilderness" in the book refers to Wayne's spiritual wilderness throughout the book. He rejects God, feeling that God has placed him in intolerable situations, and that his hatred of Leon is exactly just. The reader can hardly help but sympathize with him - but a heart full of hatred and bitterness leads, not to happiness, but to more impulsive decisions that eventually ruin his chances of happiness. By his own fault, he finds himself engaged to a wonderful girl who he does not care for, yet he can not bring himself to be honest either with her or with the girl he does care for.
When his hypocritical position is finally exposed, he impulsively and hopelessly dashes off to "go West", hoping to forget his past and just live a hard, peaceful life with no more horrifying torment. But going West was by no means a safe journey, and Wayne finds himself lost and alone in a wilderness that matches the spiritual wilderness he has suffered through and been lost in for so long.
Fortunately, he is not really alone. God is in the wilderness, too, waiting for Wayne to face his own unwillingness to choose a better way and the consequences which have been his own, not God's, fault. Only then can Wayne abandon his pride, resentment and bitterness, and come "by way of the wilderness", to God.
This is a well-written story but I found it very difficult and rocky, emotionally, to follow. His childhood really was awful. Then at the point where Wayne chose by his own actions to be false to two good women, however noble his misguided intentions might have been, I could not respect him any more. The description of his wilderness journey was amazing - it seemed like a very accurate portrayal of the difficulty of surviving alone somewhere between the East Coast and the Sierras.
I cried a bit when he was finally redeemed - but while I was so glad he was redeemed by God, I couldn't quite be glad for the girl who found a way to excuse his unbelievably passive and ultimately less-than-honest course concerning his real love interest vs. his confirmed engagement to a very nice girl. Had I been her best friend, I would have wanted her to stay away! My loss of respect for him in the middle of the book affected the rest of the book for me. I kind of got the idea that Isabella Alden had difficulty finding a persuasive way to excuse it, too.
It was still a good book and several good evenings of reading, but those were the weaknesses. Many people might enjoy it more than I did, and I hope they will.
A very interesting story.
